Landman (kazakh: Ландман; russian: Ландман) is a rural locality in the Altai District of East Kazakhstan Region. Historically, it was a German settlement. The name Landmann in German translates to "farmer". It is part of the Maleyevsky rural district and is situated on the right bank of the Beriozovka River, northeast of the district center, the city of Altai. Its KATO code is 634833300.[1].
History
Landman was founded by German settlers in the late 19th century. Between 1895 and 1916, the German population in the village was significant. Most residents were peasants engaged in agriculture.
Economy and agriculture
Agriculture was the main economic activity in Landman. The village cultivated grains and also grew vegetables and fruits in greenhouses, such as cucumbers and watermelons. Crop selection enterprises conducted agricultural experiments.
Facilities included a local club, a general store, and a medical station. The “Landman School” offered education up to grade four. Most residents worked at the Beriozovsky State Farm, division №2, which specialized in apple, cherry, and other fruit tree cultivation.
The renaming of "Sovietskaya Street" to "Sadovaya Street" (“Garden Street”) reflects the village’s agricultural heritage.[2] After the collapse of the state farm in the 1990s, many institutions ceased operation.
Transport and infrastructure
Landman once had a bus stop connecting it to nearby towns. However, due to infrastructure changes and reduced demand, the bus service was discontinued.
Until 2013, Landman was part of the now-defunct Beriozovsky rural district. In 2020–2021, a modular block water supply station (BMS) was built to provide potable water.
Literature and archives
Historical archives by Ivan I. Schellenberg[3] mentions the migration of Germans to Siberia, including villages such as Landman, dating back to 1736.
Population
Since the 1940s, the village has had a notable German community, along with Russians and Ukrainians. Archival documents on the residents of Landman can be found in the CPSU records[4], the State Archives of East Kazakhstan[5], and databases such as "Victims of Political Terror in the USSR"[6] and “Recovered Names.”[7]
Seventeen Germans were documented in Landman between 1895 and 1916.[8]
Landscape and nature
Landman is known for its picturesque natural scenery. Sadovaya Street offers views of forests and the Beriozovka River. The area’s rich vegetation gives it a distinct aroma, especially during summer when many locals engage in beekeeping.
Nearby, Mount Revnyukha — named for its lush plant life — is traditionally used for harvesting wild rhubarb.
