The Spanish Society of Malacology (or Sociedad Española de Malacología in Spanish, short SEM) is a Spanish scientific society dedicated to the study of mollusks. Established in 1980, SEM promotes research, conservation, and dissemination of malacological knowledge across Spain and internationally.

History

The Sociedad Española de Malacología was legally established on August 8, 1980, as a non-profit scientific association. Its headquarters are located at the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN) in Madrid.[1]

Mission and Objectives

The aims of SEM include promoting and disseminating malacological research, increasing scientific knowledge of mollusks, supporting conservation and sustainable use of molluscan biodiversity, and organizing activities to protect natural heritage and ecosystems related to mollusks.[1]

Publications

SEM publishes Iberus, a peer-reviewed scientific journal that covers research on mollusks, including taxonomy, ecology, and conservation. Established in 1981, Iberus is published twice a year, in January and July, with occasional supplements.[2]

Activities

SEM organizes annual scientific events, such as the Malacological Forum, which addresses issues like invasive mollusks and conservation challenges. The society collaborates with European and international malacological institutions and is a member of Unitas Malacologica.[1]

Membership

Membership is open to individuals or institutions interested in malacology. Members include researchers, educators, students, and hobbyists dedicated to molluscan studies.[1]
