Antakarana is a northern dialect of Malagasy spoken by Antakarana people in the province of Antsiranana.[1][2]
Classification
Antakarana is a northern dialect of the Malagasy language, which belongs to the Austronesian family. It is closely related to Northern Sakalava, Bushi, Northern Betsimisaraka, and Tsimihety dialects.[3]
Geographic distribution
Antakarana is the popular dialect in the regions of Diana and to a lesser extent Sava and Sofia.
Characteristics
The prolonged French presence in Antsiranana province has led speakers of the Antakarana dialect to incorporate French vocabulary into their language, resulting in a blend of native and French linguistic elements.
